From Prison Cell to Police Sergeant

MY STORY

I was born on July 7, 1977 (7/7/77) in New Haven, Connecticut. By age 22, I had 13 felonies and was serving a 15-year sentence. I missed my daughter’s birth. I watched my son grow up through letters and pictures. A professor looked me in the eye and said,

“It doesn’t matter if you get a pardon. No one will touch you.”

The system was designed to keep me trapped. Society expected me to fail.

I refused.

On December 12, 2012, I received a full pardon from the State of Connecticut—at the time, the longest criminal record ever pardoned in the state. Two years later, on July 28, 2014, I became a police officer with the New Haven Police Department. In April 2021, I was promoted to sergeant after scoring #9 out of over 60 candidates.

But my story doesn’t end there.

THE JOURNEY

Prison (1999-2003)

I served 5 years—4 in prison, 6 months in a halfway house, and 6 months on parole. Instead of letting it break me, I used that time to rebuild. I earned college credits, worked every program offered, and made a promise to my mother Velma: I would never be a burden to her again.

The Pardon (2012)

After years of hard work, education, and proving myself, I received a full pardon. It was the longest criminal record pardoned in Connecticut at that time—13 felonies.

Becoming a Cop (2014)

They said it couldn’t be done. A convicted felon becoming a police officer? Impossible. On July 28, 2014, I proved them wrong.

Promoted to Sergeant (2021)

I scored #9 out of over 60 candidates on the sergeant’s exam. I am believed to be the first documented convicted felon to become a police sergeant in United States history.
